Custom Subperiosteal Implants: A New Alternative to Zygomatic Implants.

Workshop Description:

This innovative course is designed for dental implantologists, oral surgeons, and prosthodontists, focusing on the emerging field of custom subperiosteal implants as a novel alternative to traditional zygomatic implants. The course provides an in-depth exploration of the design, fabrication, and surgical techniques associated with custom subperiosteal implants, particularly for patients with severe maxillary atrophy where conventional implants are not viable.

Course Objectives:

  1. Understanding Subperiosteal Implants: Gain a comprehensive understanding of the history, development, and current state of subperiosteal implant technology, focusing on its advantages over traditional implant methods.
  2. Patient Selection and Evaluation: Learn to identify suitable candidates for custom subperiosteal implants and conduct thorough patient evaluations, including anatomical considerations and risk assessment.
  3. Design and Fabrication: Acquire knowledge on the design process of custom subperiosteal implants, utilizing digital imaging and 3D modeling techniques for precise and individualized fabrication.
  4. Surgical Techniques: Master the surgical techniques for placing custom subperiosteal implants, including flap design, bone preparation, and implant positioning.

Speaker: Dr. David Alfi

Dr. Alfi, originally from Los Angeles, California, attended Columbia University for dental school, where he developed a passion for oral surgery, radiology, anesthesia, diagnoses, medical management, dentistry, and surgery. After completing his residency, he joined Houston Methodist and Texas Children’s Hospital as an associate professor and full-scope surgeon. Driven by a commitment to research, innovation, patient care, and education, he later established his private practice. Dr. Alfi is dedicated to achieving excellent surgical outcomes, advancing the field through research, and ensuring patient comfort and satisfaction. Grateful for the opportunity to contribute to others’ well-being, he remains at the forefront of evolving techniques and technologies.

Speaker: Dr. Sergio Ortegon DDS, MS

Dr. Ortegon is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics, a Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontics, and a Maxillofacial Prosthodontist.  He graduated from the Universidad Javeriana in Bogota-Colombia in 1998. He completed residencies in; Advanced Education in General Dentistry and Prosthodontics and a Masters in Dental Science at the University of Connecticut Health Science Center. In addition, he did a fellowship in Maxillofacial Prosthetics at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He is currently an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Texas School of Dentistry-Houston and a clinical consultant for the Texas Children’s Hospital Department of Plastic Surgery. He is also the president of the American College of Prosthodontics-Houston Chapter. Dr. Ortegon has published in peer-reviewed specialty journals and lectures locally and internationally. He has a private practice limited to his specialty and subspecialty in Bellaire, TX.
